There is a good story in here. It's buried under a lot of flaws. Some examples: The author uses a lot of descriptive language. This is good, but it is overused. Sentences have multiple superlative adjectives and adverbs not everything needs one!
SPOILERS Pacing is off. Most of the book occurs in the span of a day. In that day, the mc gets in multiple, distinct deadly fights against dangerous opponents that he only barely survived. I counted 5 one extended sequence on earth, 4 on newplanet. On a related note, the progression is unreasonably rapid. Tons of new powers in the course of a day, some of which are exceedingly rare.
The MC goes through multiple cycles of loathing and respect with his new party members, to the point of irrationality. Even minor statements will result in extensive rants.
Sometimes there is a good explanation cultural taboos. In others, it seems to be to rachet up drama and comes across as stupid. G, in particular, takes everything personally and goes on insult tirades on multiple occasions, several of which are after apologizing and calling the MC alright. If this is anything like the author's other series, it'll be strung out as long as possible, without any goals being reached for multiple books.
I read LItRPG a lot and this book stands out from the crowd. The seamless timing of flashbacks and plot history combined with a unique vocabulary for storytelling made this my new favorite. On to book 2! I quickly became immersed in the main character and the story line. Non-stop action told in a light enough way to be truly compelling it. Give it a read. I am off to grab book two.
A very intelligent story with interesting, well I developed characters. This author knows swords and oyher weapons. A very exciting story. This book was by far one of the best books I have read in years. Definitely recommend. Interesting story premise and well written. Cancel anytime. Try Audible Premium Plus free.

He did not expect to wake up in a hospital bed, in the crosshairs of a professional killer. A friend he thought lost forever shows him a mysterious game that only a select few can jack into.
It's the perfect escape, and what seems a fun lark becomes all too real as he enters a realm where level-ups affect both worlds, dying in game is dying for real, and no one is hungrier for Val's secrets then the men hunting for his head. Everything that happens in the first two books just falls away nothing matters.
Lets make one thing clear. I loved the first two books. You spend over 20 hours watching Val gain power, struggle, and achieve, then he wakes up from a coma having lost everything he learned l and all his memories of what he accomplished. Listening to a character who blew up a Dreadnought, killed the Overlord, and one of the most powerful Dark Lords we know of floundering about like a noobie again as of over 4 hours into this book sucks ass.
I really hope this gets better later on, but as of now I won't be continuing the series. Such a waist of a good story line. Unfortunately this book totally hinges on the old cliché of the main character of getting amnesia and losing a great deal of his power.
And unfortunately when I see things like this I know that the author simply wanted to do a particular story and they reached onto the bookshelf and pulled off the standard trope to handle the situation and most of those are just ways to handicap the main character.
Any sequel in a series has to find a balance with the other books in the series. The author found a great way for the majority of the characters to get to the same knowledge and level skill as the main character Val without making it awkward except for Val and quintessential voice of Oblivion rattling in his skull.
Excellent work. I highly recommend this book and hope that other listeners enjoy it as much as I did. I am pretty pissed off about this book. I loved Val, Elise, Sten, Gregor, Halvar and even the dwarves in book one and two. Hell, I even kinda liked Selena's character. This book went so far left with the unending amnesia scenario and the intro of new characters I did not like.
I just can't seem to get into this book and I am pretty sure this is turning into another harem type series. Johnson WTF??? Where the hell is the continuity? What happened to our favorite characters from books one and two? I am so disappointed. No clue if I will finish this book and I dont know if I will waste my credit on the next book.
Couldnt get through 30 minutes of this story. The reader is not taken on an adventure with your writing this time. It feels like everything is disjointed, Too many POV changes in the first chapter.
Definitive locale requires too many rewinds to keep up with the changing chaos. If you ride the "main character has amnesia" card for literal hours, when the audience knows what he's forgotten, it's more frustrating than endearing. Play the cheap trick, move on and actually develop the story rather than just recovering the same territory again.
sooo I hated the beginning. truly I was so emotionally charged and invested in the main character that I was outrageously raged out at this start. and this is a huuuge but! he pulls it all right back together by the end blowing me away once again. this author is awesome. a mysterious intense fantasy of litrpg wisdom. listen or read these. barns and noble dont have any idea what litrpg is.
they get all indignant when ever I ask hahahah pointing me at the games. I'm like no it's a book have a grateful day on the right side of the sod people! Time is running out for Val and everyone he loves. So much for happy endings. this is a great book and worth the read. I personally cant wait till the next one comes out. overall it is a enjoyable listen, however the author makes the listener experience all of the mc:s challenges and that included his confusion, and that made the experience somewhat stale at times, the story became so much better when the mc:s mind got fixed, imo.
Like the rest of the series so far quality book and listen many twists and turns with characters you want to follow and develop 👍. narration is excellent, same as the first two books. my difficulty is with how the author moves the main character from the alternative world to the current world which is the same issue I had with book one.
However once past that the book picks up pace and delivers as you would expect I assume you have listened to the first two books! This book more fully merges the two worlds so I hope the next books make it easier to move forward with the story rather than the confusion of being reborn as it were. Overall a good story I will certainly by the next one.
The book dose start of a bit slow, But dose pick up it's pace quick, Once again the M. H knock it out the park. The ending was perfect and the story really well done. The Narrators really bring this book to life, one of the best I have ver listened to. Download it now! well I have to be honest when I first started reading the second book I thought I myself will you make up your mind whether you having this world or the game world I nearly stop reading because it was that confusing but finally it has come together and I am really looking forward to part 3.
Julia engaging in VR gaming after her experience!? No way would she go near anything like what had caused her so much damage. The most painful thing about this book though is, after listening to Val start to realise his power, we have to listen to him flounder around as a complete noob again. Been there! Done that!
